589 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Health and Children when work will commence on the proposed new paediatric unit at Portlaoise General Hospital, County Laois; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24634/00]

The capital project at Portlaoise General Hospital, which includes the new paediatric department, new acute psychiatric unit, medical ward and catering department major upgradings, site services and car parking has been approved in principle and it is expected that the works will commence in the near future. The new project will be completed and commissioned in about two years and will cost in the region of £25 million including construction, equipment, fees etc.
