Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

Michael Creed

Question:

683 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if Ireland is on target to meet objectives in reducing greenhouse gas emissions arising from the Kyoto Protocol; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24465/00]

Net emissions of greenhouse gases for 1998, the latest date with finalised figures, were 17.6% above 1990 levels, compared to the target of 13% above 1990 levels in the period 2008-12 under the Kyoto Protocol. I have now published the national climate change strategy, and I am satisfied that the measures it contains are sufficient to ensure our Kyoto target will be achieved. A copy of the strategy has been placed in the Oireachtas Library.
