Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Ivan Yates

Question:

687 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when it is envisaged that the new sewerage system in Bunclody, County Wexford, will be given approval; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a number of important developments are put on hold until this sewerage scheme is constructed; if, in view of the fact that his Department has designated this town as one for urban renewal tax incentive status under the urban renewal scheme, he will expedite this proposal; and when it will proceed. [24469/00]

A preliminary report for this scheme, which has been included for funding under the rural towns and villages initiative, was approved by my Department in August this year. It is now a matter for Wexford County Council to advance the scheme to contract documents stage.

Louis J. Belton

Question:

688 Mr. Belton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will state the situation with regard to sewage treatment in Lanesboro, County Longford; and the plans that are envisaged by his Department in this regard. [24600/00]

This proposal has been included in the list of schemes submitted by Longford County Council in response to my Department's request to local authorities to undertake fresh assessments of needs for capital work in their areas and to prioritise their pro posals on the basis of the assessments. The priority lists were taken into account in framing the water services investment programme, 2000-02, announced in July.

Because of the level of competing demands and the need to prioritise individual proposals on a national basis, it was not possible to include all schemes proposed by local authorities in the recently announced water services investment programme 2000-02. This is the first phase of a rolling programme that will continue up to the end of the current national development plan in 2006. Further schemes will be added to the programme on an annual basis during that period. This scheme will be further considered when the next round of water services projects is being advanced to enter planning in 2001.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

689 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will expedite the approval of works in respect of the main drainage scheme for Portlaoise, County Laois in order to alleviate flooding on the western side of the town; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24601/00]

Proposals for interim works to address the flooding problem in the Knockmay and Mill Lane areas of Portlaoise as part of the Portlaoise sewerage scheme have been received in my Department and are under urgent consideration.
