Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - Environmental Policy.

John Gormley

Question:

722 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if consideration is being given to increasing the maximum fines for failure to comply with a waste or IPC licence from the Environmental Protection Agency. [24879/00]

Both the EPA Act, 1992, and the Waste Management Act, 1996, provide for a maximum fine of £10 million for convictions on indictment. I have no proposals to increase this already substantial maximum penalty. I will bring forward, in the context of the planned EPA (Amendment) Bill, suitable proposals to update the maximum fines which may be imposed under these Acts on foot of summary convictions.
