Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - EU Directives.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

758 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will detail, from the time of the present Dáil, the financial penalties imposed on the Government resulting from the failure of her Department to comply with EU directives; and the legal proceedings that are now pending by the EU as a result of the failure of her Department to comply with EU directives. [24145/00]

There are no financial penalties against this Department for failure to comply with EU directives. There are, as the Deputy may be aware, two cases being brought against Ireland for failure to transmit SAC sites and for failure to protect the habitat of red grouse in County Mayo. While I cannot comment on the specifics of these cases as they are sub judice, I can assure the Deputy that my Department will vigorously defend its position.
