Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - Interpretative Centres.

Michael Ring

Question:

762 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the number of sites that were selected for consideration as the location of an interpretative centre in Ballycroy, County Mayo; when was the closing date for site submissions; if any sites were offered after the closing date; and if she will give details in this regard. [24297/00]

While there was no formal closure date advertised for the submission of offers of sites for the proposed visitor centre, local interests were advised at the time that the Department wished to receive applications from interested parties by end-June 1999. In the event, five applications were to hand by end-June and a further site was offered later.

Evaluation of the sites on offer has been proceeding over recent months. This process is now nearing conclusion and I expect that the Department will very shortly complete negotiations for the purchase of a suitable site on offer.
