Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - Digital Broadcasting.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

763 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands when digital television will be available throughout County Donegal; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [24298/00]

Earlier this year, I announced my revised proposals for establishing a digital terrestrial television – DTT – platform in Ireland with a view to DTT services becoming available during the course of 2001. It is my objective that the DTT platform should have universal coverage but it is envisaged that it will take a number of years to build a DTT transmission network capable of achieving this. DTT coverage in any given area will depend on the transmission infrastructure roll-out plan of the digital transmission operator, which will be influenced by the conditions on roll-out set down by the Office of the Director of Telecommunications Regulation in the proposed DTT transmission licence to be provided for in the Broadcasting Bill, 1999.
