Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - EU Directives.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

787 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will detail, from the time of the present Dáil, the financial penalties imposed on the Government resulting from the failure of his Department to comply with EU directives; and the legal proceedings that are now pending by the EU as a result of the failure of his Department to comply with EU directives. [24146/00]

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 888 and 952 of Tuesday, 3 October 2000. I can inform the Deputy that no financial penalties have been imposed to date.

In relation to Council Directive 95/46/EC of 24 October 1995 on the protection of individuals with regard to processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, the Commission decided in January 2000 to take proceedings against Ireland for non-transposition of the directive.
