Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Michael Ring

Question:

800 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when a new garda station will be built in a town (details supplied) in County Mayo. [24657/00]

The building and major refurbishment of Garda stations is carried out in conformity with a priority list compiled in consultation with the Garda authorities, Garda staff associations and the Office of Public Works. Although it is the intention to build a new station on the site of the old station and married quarters, there are 12/13 Garda stations on this list with a priority higher than the station nominated by the Deputy that have yet to be addressed.

It should be noted, however, that works are not always undertaken in strict numerical sequence as, for instance, the commencement of a project may first be dependent upon the successful acquisition of a greenfield site for development. Although a sketch scheme for the new Garda station in question has been approved by local Garda management, it is not possible to state, at this point, when the site works might commence. I can assure the Deputy, however, that the building of the station will be progressed as far as is feasible in accordance with the agreed priority list, and to a timeframe determined by overall Garda building priorities and the availability of resources.
