Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - Grant Aid.

John Perry

Question:

840 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will ensure that grant aid for Derrylehan national school, Grange, County Sligo, is not withdrawn as the enrolment in the school in September 2001 will be eight or nine pupils; if he will rescind his decision as clearly the decision to withdraw grant aid would ultimately have adverse effects on the school and will have far reaching implications; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Gerry Reynolds

Question:

847 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will ensure that the board of management at Derrylehan national school, Grange, County Sligo, will receive grant aid towards the school for the year 2001-2002 and subsequent years in view of the fact that the enrolment at the school in September 2001 will be a definite eight pupils and a possible nine pupils. [23940/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 840 and 847 together.

In view of declining enrolments at Derrylehan national school, my Department advised the board of management in May 2000 of the likelihood of grant-aid being withdrawn from the school with effect from the end of the current school year.

The local inspector has been asked to prepare a report on the future viability of the school and a final decision on continued recognition will be made when this report is received.
