Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - In-service Training.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

925 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of inservice training days to be taken by post-primary teachers and primary teachers in the current school year; the reason for these training days; the level of cover provided in schools for the absent teachers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24841/00]

It is estimated that the number of post-primary and primary teacher participant training days in 2000 will be in excess of 150,000 day equivalents.

The purpose of the training concerned is to support teachers involved in curriculum and programme change in schools and for the professional development of teachers generally.

In the case of national programmes of inservice arising from curriculum and programme change, substitution is available for participants, where this is regarded as essential.
