Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - Gynaecology Service.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

184 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health and Children his plans for meeting the gynaecological needs of the health service; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24485/00]

Gynaecology services are provided in each health board area. This is consistent with existing health policy which promotes regional sufficiency in terms of service provision. The further development of this service is a matter in the first instance for each health agency having regard to service priorities and the overall level of funding available. Information collected under the Hospital Inpatient Enquiry – HIPE – indicates that in 1999 over 80,000 gynaecology procedures were performed nationally across the acute hospital sector.

Finally, I can also inform the Deputy that gynaecology is a target specialty under the waiting list initiative and accordingly dedicated funding is allocated to health agencies to enable additional increased activity in this specialty.
