Vol. 525 No. 3

Written Answers. - Merrion Street Crèche.

Question:

196 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Finance when the Merrion Street crèche will be reopened; the compensation he can offer to parents who have lost out as a result of the closure; and if he will carry out an extensive investigation into the circumstances that led to this situation. [25182/00]

I understand that the Mount Street crèche will be re-opened very shortly.

I can assure the Deputy that my Department has been working very closely with the co-operative which runs the crèche to deal with the problem.

An inspection by the Eastern Regional Health Authority revealed that the premises were below mandatory standards. The Office of Public Works has now almost finished the necessary refurbishment work. I understand from the co-operat ive that the private crèche management company which has been identified by the co-operative may need some time to install new equipment. Following that, the crèche will reopen.
While I am very aware of the serious problems that closure of the crèche has caused parents, the most important task is to ensure that it reopens, with the proper facilities, as quickly as possible. Compensation would give rise to considerable administrative difficulties for the co-operative, which would probably divert attention from the work of refurbishing and reorganising the crèche.
The circumstances which led to the closure of the crèche have been fully examined by the co-operative and my Department. A further investigation would not be useful.
My Department is discussing with the co-operative a new longer-term management structure for Mount Street and for any other crèches which may be established. The aim is to put in place arrangements which will help to avoid the sort of difficulties which have arisen with the Mount Street crèche.
