Vol. 525 No. 3

Written Answers. - Road Speed Limits.

Ivan Yates

Question:

245 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will alter all speed limit signage so that when motorists move out of a restricted speed limit zone, instead of there being an unlimited zone, the correct speed limit would be displayed instead of the present unlimited sign. [24884/00]

The general speed limit of 60 mph applies to all roads other than those subject to the lower limits of 30 mph – built-up area speed limit – and 40 mph or 50 mph – special speed limits – or locations where the motorway speed limit of 70 mph applies. On leaving a zone where one of these speed limits applies, a person encounters the sign which consists of a black bar with a white background which means that the general speed limit applies.

In the context of examination of the implementation of metricated speed limits the current format and deployment of the general speed limit sign will also be examined.

Question No. 246 taken with Question No. 240.
