Vol. 525 No. 3

Written Answers. - Waste Disposal.

Ivan Yates

Question:

270 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the initiatives he has in respect of the design of houses to promote the separation of waste at source in order to promote recycling. [24912/00]

My Department issued guidelines in 1999 with regard to the design of social housing, which specify, inter alia, that all dwellings should be provided with an appropriate location for the storage of refuse containers which is convenient for occupants and facilitates the refuse collection service.

With regard to development generally, including housing development, planning permission may be granted by a planning authority, under the Planning and Development Act, 2000, subject to conditions requiring the provision of facilities for the collection or storage of recyclable materials.
