Vol. 525 No. 3

Written Answers. - Local Authority Funding.

Ivan Yates

Question:

282 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he proposes to increase funding to local authorities for the local improvement scheme whereby private roads can be resurfaced; and if his attention has been drawn to the large demand under this scheme which is not currently being met. [24924/00]

The provision for the local improvements scheme in 2000 is £6 million, which is an increase of 20% on the 1999 allocation and a 100% increase on the 1997 allocation.

The increased funding for the local improvements scheme in 2000 was used to the greatest possible extent to reduce the numbers of applications on hands in those counties where the backlog was greatest.

I will be announcing details of the 2001 local improvements scheme grants early in the new year.
