Vol. 525 No. 3

Written Answers. - Local Authority Funding.

Ivan Yates

Question:

287 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his policy in relation to the capping of local authority rates increases on the commercial sector; and if so, the level this is anticipated for 2001. [24930/00]

Rate in the pound increases in 2001 will be capped at the 2000 level plus 9%. This rate is designed to strike a balance between meeting the financial needs of local authorities while, at the same time, ensuring that the rate demand on the business sector is neither excessive nor disproportionate to other sectors of society.

A figure of 9% is the maximum percentage by which rates may be increased in 2001. It is, of course, open to local authorities to determine lower rates, if they so wish.
