Vol. 525 No. 3

Written Answers. - Local Authority Managers.

Ivan Yates

Question:

327 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has satisfied himself with the current procedures whereby county managers can be reappointed for a further period beyond the seven year contract; and the proposals he has to review the self nominating aspect of this procedure within the local authority. [25011/00]

Section 47A of the Local Government Act, 1991, as inserted by section 1 of the Local Government Act, 2000, provides for an extension to the tenure of office of a local authority manager by three years subject to a maximum tenure period of ten years and an upper age limit of 65 years. Under the Local Government (Tenure of Office of Managers) Regulations, 2000, which I made on 12 July last, the tenure period of a manager is extended where the prescribed notification is given by the manager to the cathaoirleach of the local authority concerned. I have no proposals to review the new arrangements at this stage.
