Vol. 525 No. 3

Written Answers. - Traveller Accommodation.

Ivan Yates

Question:

349 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the progress made in relation to the provision of halting sites nationally and permanent housing accommodation for Travellers; and the current estimated demand for accommodation by Travellers. [25070/00]

The annual count of Traveller families undertaken in November 1999 shows that a total of 3,583 Traveller families have been provided with accommodation by the local authorities or with local authority assistance.

Figures from the five year Traveller accommodation programme covering the period 2000-2004, adopted by the relevant local authorities in accordance with the requirements of the Housing (Traveller Accommodation) Act, 1998, indicate a current demand for 1,900 units of accommodation. Local authorities are now in the course of implementing these programmes.
