Vol. 525 No. 3

Written Answers. - Waste Management.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

120 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when he will publish his long promised waste management and recycling policy document; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23997/00]

Jack Wall

Question:

156 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the progress made to date in achieving the targets set by the Government in its waste management policy published in 1998; when the promised new policy statement on waste minimisation and recycling will be published; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24787/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 120 and 156 together.

The waste recovery targets set out in the 1998 policy statement Changing our Ways are to be achieved over a 15 year timescale. While some progress has been made in the interim period, the overall national position in this regard will not be known until the publication by the Environmental Protection Agency of the national waste database report for 2001. I expect to be in a position to publish the proposed policy statement on waste prevention and recovery by the end of the year.
