Vol. 525 No. 3

Written Answers. - Electronic Voting.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

133 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the progress made in regard to the introduction of electronic voting in the next general election; if it is intended to use electronic voting in some constituencies only; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24783/00]

Tenders for an electronic voting and counting system are being examined. When the successful contractor has been chosen and testing establishes that the system operates satisfactorily, the Government will consider using the equipment in a number of constituencies at the next general election. No decision has been taken at this stage on the constituencies in which electronic voting and counting will take place. Amending legislation, which is being prepared, will also have to be enacted.
