Vol. 525 No. 3

Written Answers. - House Prices.

Michael Creed

Question:

154 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the way in which his Department monitors the fluctuation in house prices; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24706/00]

My Department obtains regular returns from mortgage lending institutions in respect of the prices of houses for which mortgage loans are approved. My Department also obtains house loan survey data provided by individual house purchasers and collected by the mortgage lending agencies. Data from these returns are published in my Department's quarterly and annual housing statistics bulletins.

Earlier this year, I appointed consultants to examine the current methodology for monitoring house prices, to recommend improvements and to establish a methodology for collating, analysing and producing house price information in the future. The consultants' report will be finalised by the end of this year.
