Question:

161 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Education and Science when he will provide a classroom assistant to a person (details supplied) in County Roscommon in view of the fact that the person was profoundly deaf prior to surgery and that the national educational psychological service has recommended the appointment of such an assistant. [25340/00]

My Department's inspectorate has been requested to investigate and report on the special needs assistant support required for the pupil referred to by the Deputy.

On receipt of the inspector's report, officials of my Department will contact the school authorities.

162 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 38 and 71 of 19 April 2000, he will indicate the current level of speech therapy services to school going children; the shortfall which exists in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25342/00]

(Dr. Woods): Officials of my Department are in discussion with officials from the Department of Health and Children to ascertain the information sought by the Deputy in relation to the current level of speech therapy services available to school going children. The provision of speech therapy services is the responsibility of the health authorities.
I hope to be in a position to provide this information shortly.
