Vol. 525 No. 4

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

John Perry

Question:

164 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will intervene with all parties involved on behalf of a person (details supplied) in County Sligo and immediately allow him into the school (details supplied) in view of the fact that he needs to attend a school which caters for children with special needs and not a school for mentally handicapped as suggested, as it would have a negative impact on his development; if his attention has been drawn to his circumstances in view of the medical information provided; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25376/00]

The pupil referred to by the Deputy is currently attending a mainstream primary school in County Sligo.

My Department's inspectorate is investigating an application for the enrolment of the pupil in the school referred to by the Deputy.

As an interim measure, officials in my Department are examining an application for resource teaching support in the pupil's current school.

Officials in my Department will be in touch with the school authorities when a decision has been reached in this case.
