Vol. 525 No. 4

Written Answers. - Emergency Services.

Liam Lawlor

Question:

109 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will have examinations made again into the possibility of sanctioning the use in emergency situations of green flashing lights on cars being used by members of the medical profession in the context of the Road Traffic (Lighting of Vehicles) Regulations 1963 to 1996; his views on whether a review of these regulations would be timely in view of the fact that more people are resorting to general practitioners in emergency situations as a result of overcrowding and other problems at the accident and emergency units in our acute hospital services. [25312/00]

I have no proposals to review the Road Traffic (Lighting of Vehicles) Regulations with a view to providing for the use of green flashing lights on cars being used in emergencies by members of the medical profession. The use of flashing lights must be limited to protect their effectiveness in emergencies and in order to avoid causing confusion among other road users.
