John V. Farrelly

Question:

137 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of convictions in the courts over the past two years for speeding or being under the influence of alcohol which took place between the hours of 12 midnight and 4 a.m.; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25303/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 136 and 137 together.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that detailed statistics in relation to convictions and fines for speeding and drink driving offences between 12 midnight and 4 a.m. for the past two years are not readily available from Garda records. While I understand that a breakdown of the offences which resulted in convictions on a 'time of the offence' basis is not available from the Courts Service, the annual report of An Garda Síochána copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library, provides a range of information which the Deputy might find useful. The latest published report is in respect of 1999.
