149 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his views on whether the lack of recreational amenities is a factor in the incidence of crime among young people. [25883/00]
I am glad to have this opportunity to pay tribute to the many men and women who generously give their time to the many sporting and recreational organisations that contribute so much to our society. These organisations play an invaluable role in providing young people with a positive outlet for their energies.
Although there is no necessary linkage, a lack of recreational facilities can be one of the indicators of multiple deprivation, which, in turn, may be associated with young people who engage in crime. That is why this Government, through a number of Departments, has devoted an unprecedented level of resources to fund a wide variety of activities in the community.
Only this week, the Taoiseach and Tánaiste announced the National Children's Strategy. One of the objectives of the strategy is that children will have access to play, sport recreational and cultural activities to enrich the experiences of children. I am sure that this initiative will be welcomed by all sides of the House.
