Vol. 526 No. 2

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil Under Standing Order 31.

Before proceeding to the Order of Business, I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31 dealing with two different topics. I propose to deal with these two topics separately and I will call on Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office.

In regard to the first topic, I have received notice from Deputy Quinn and I now call on him to state the matter.

In accordance with the terms of Standing Order 31, I wish to give notice of my intention to seek to move the adjournment of the Dáil to discuss the following specific and important matter of public interest requiring urgent attention, namely the continuing serious disruption to second level education and in particular the problems for students facing examinations arising from action taken by members of ASTI and the urgent need for a Government initiative to try to seek a solution to the dispute, especially in light of the threat of increased action over the coming weeks.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31. Therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.

In regard to the second topic, I received notice from Deputy Gormley and I now call on him to state the matter.

Under Standing Order 31, I wish to have the business of the House suspended today to discuss the following issue of public importance, namely the continuing crisis in public transport, in particular the impending DART strike proposed for Monday next, the inconvenience caused to thousands of commuters as a consequence and the need to resolve this as a matter of urgency.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31. Therefore, I cannot grant leave to grant the motion.
