Vol. 526 No. 2

Written Answers. - Sports and Recreational Partnerships.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

36 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation when he will establish the sports and recreational partnerships promised in the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25954/00]

The Irish Sports Council statement of strategy, 2000-02, entitled "A New Era for Sport" was formally launched in September. The strategy statement sets out clearly the council's vision for sport and how it proposes to deliver on that vision. The strategy incorporates a pathway for the creation of local sports partnerships as a means of creating sustainable sports development infrastructure at local level, along the lines envisaged by Government and the social partners in the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness.

I understand that as part of the consultation process, the council has met with interested parties and is currently meeting with relevant Departments. The council will advertise shortly for declarations of interest from local statutory agencies to be considered as part of the pilot process and expect to have a number of pilot projects in place during 2001.
