Vol. 526 No. 2

Written Answers. - General Practitioner Services.

Bernard Allen

Question:

86 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the discussions he has had with the Irish Medical Organisation in relation to the future of general practice in the context of the Department of Health and Children's review of the 1994 health strategy document, Shaping a Healthy Future. [26160/00]

Officials from my Department meet on a regular basis the Irish Medical Organisation and other groups involved in general practice development, such as the Irish College of General Practitioners, to discuss ideas, initiatives and other matters of mutual concern and to establish how the goals set for general practice in strategy and other policy papers are being advanced. The process is, therefore, an ongoing one that has regard to the changing needs of, and expectations from, general practice by the public.

At present, there is a wide-ranging review of general practitioner services being carried out by the health board chief executive officers. When that review is completed, in the near future, it will serve as the basis for the significant development of general practice in Ireland and, in order to ensure the most effective implementation of its findings and recommendations, a major process of consultation and discussion with the bodies mentioned above will be entered into.
