Dan Neville

Question:

246 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will give a comprehensive explanation as to the reason blood and other samples given by a family (details supplied) over a two year period from April 1997 were not returned to the family following repeated requests between April 1997 and mid-1999; the number of samples taken from the family as part of the investigation into symptoms experienced at the time of the EPA-led investigation into animal deaths and ill health in the area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26342/00]

Michael Collins

Question:

262 Mr. Collins asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will support the setting up of an independent investigation into the actions of the Mid-Western Health Board concerning the indefinite loss of blood samples taken by the board in April 1997 (details supplied). [26456/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 246 and 262 together.

The Mid-Western Health Board conducted human health studies as part of a multi-agency investigation, co-ordinated by the Environmental Protection Agency, into animal deaths and animal health problems in the Askeaton area of County Limerick. With regard to the concerns of the family regarding the blood samples, referred to by the Deputies, I have written to the chief executive officer of the Mid-Western Health Board requesting him to investigate the matter further and reply directly to the deputies.
