428 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of VTOS places in each VEC area for the academic years 1999 and 2000; and the number of applicants for VTOS courses for the academic years 1999 and 2000. [26699/00]
The vocational training opportunities scheme is delivered locally by vocational education committees. Each year, my Department informs each VEC of its quota of VTOS places from the total of 5,000 available overall. The VEC selects the students for the programme and returns statistical information periodically in connection with grant payments. This information relates only to actual students and my Department receives no information on applicants. In the current academic year 2000-01, demand for VTOS places is generally high and some vocational education committees have a waiting list. The following table lists the allocation to and numbers of VTOS places filled by each VEC in the academic years 1998-99 and 1999-2000.
