Vol. 526 No. 3

Written Answers. - Outreach Projects.

John McGuinness

Question:

430 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will have arrangements made to issue an immediate reply to a request for funding from the National University of Ireland, Maynooth-St. Kieran's College project, Kilkenny; if, in view of the urgent need for funds, he will give a clear indication on when the project will receive funds in the current year; the position on the appointment of a director and secretariat to the project; when the advertisements for the positions will be placed in the media; the timeframe for the appointment of persons to these positions; and if a written statement of the current position and his intentions for the future will be given to the project management group in order that all parties are fully informed. [26703/00]

I met with representatives of interested parties in Kilkenny at the end of August to discuss the further development of the outreach service in the city. My Department forwarded the detailed proposal from NUI Maynooth on a strategic plan for development of Kilkenny outreach campus to the higher education authority and the authority has been discussing the proposal with the university, including the issue of the staffing involved. I am awaiting the outcome of these discussions and will provide a response to NUI Maynooth on the matter in the near future.

However, as an interim measure, the higher education authority has allocated £150,000 towards the cost of the project for 2000.
