Vol. 526 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Gerry Reynolds

Question:

118 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans he has to approve similar Department facilities and expert review group assessment to assist in the education of those with aspengers syndrome, dyslexia, dyspraxia, attention deficit disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder as he has provided for those with autism; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26506/00]

The educational needs of children with aspergers syndrome, which is a form of high func tioning autism, will be addressed by the task force on autism to which the Deputy refers. I am pleased to inform the Deputy that a task force has also been established to address the educational needs of children with dyslexia.

My decision to establish task forces to review the two specific areas of autism and dyslexia was based on my concern to address a range of particular difficulties which have arisen in relation to educational provision for children suffering from these conditions. However, the establishment of task forces in these two particular areas does not in any way suggest a diminution in my concern for the educational needs of children in other special needs categories, including the categories mentioned by the Deputy.

In this connection, I would point out that a high level planning group has been working in my Department on the arrangements which should be put in place to ensure the most effective provision of a high quality co-ordinated service at all stages of education for all students with special needs. The objective is to develop a system which is fully responsive to the needs of all children with disabilities and which is supported by a level of research and expertise which will ensure the delivery of a service which is in line with best international practice in all disability areas.

I expect to receive the report of the planning group in the very near future and I can assure the Deputy that I will respond as positively as possible to any measure which will contribute to ensuring that all children with special needs receive the support they require, irrespective of the level of need involved or their location.
