Vol. 526 No. 5

Written Answers. - Prospecting Licences.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

31 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he has any plans to review the licensing terms of oil and gas development as suggested by SIPTU representatives; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26923/00]

I indicated recently that it would be premature at the moment to consider changing the licensing terms to apply to future licensing rounds.

I also said that I would keep the matter under review but that we cannot close up shop while we deliberate especially when the prospect is one of a low level of commitment to exploration beyond 2001.

I recently met SIPTU representatives and they have undertook to revert to me with their considered views on the further development of the licensing framework. I look forward to receiving those views and I will certainly give them careful consideration.
