Vol. 526 No. 5

Written Answers. - Sea Bed Levels.

Ivor Callely

Question:

40 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the information his Department has on sea bed levels in Dublin Bay; the alteration of sea bed levels in recent years; the mechanism available to correct the sea bed levels in order to restore water activities that have been lost in certain areas of Dublin Bay due to the increase in sea bed levels; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26443/00]

There is no general system in place to monitor changes in sea bed levels.

Specific studies are undertaken by individual authorities in relation to the particular needs of local areas. In particular, port companies and local authorities will monitor developments in relation to navigation channels.

As regards sea bed levels in Dublin, the Deputy will be aware that Dublin Corporation commissioned a report, which was published in 1996, into accretion at Bull Island. That report recommended that a further study should be commissioned in 2001 in order to provide a firm basis for further action, if any, to be taken. My Department has approved grant aid for Dublin Corporation at the rate of 75% and subject to a maximum of £112,500 towards the cost of such a study. A breach of the Bull Island causeway would primarily be a matter for Dublin Corporation to pursue. This report is now expected to be completed in July 2001.

The dredging of areas to allow water-based activities would have major cost and environmental implications which would of course have to be very carefully considered by the relevant authorities including Dúchas.
