Question:

43 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the total tonnage of the Irish fishing fleet in 1980 and in November 2000; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27171/00]

The tonnage of the Irish Fleet, as at 31 December 1999, was 58,684 gross registered tonnes, exclusive of vessels licensed to fish solely for bivalve molluscs. Fleet capacity in October 1991, the earliest date for which comparable data are available, was 52,981 GRT.
