Vol. 526 No. 5

Written Answers. - Roads Funding.

Beverley Flynn

Question:

99 Ms Cooper-Flynn asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will make money available under the Gaeltacht roads scheme to build a wall along the Gaisce road to prevent further coastal erosion taking place. [27081/00]

I should point out at the outset that my Department has over the last two years sanctioned a total of £650,000 towards the improvement of the R313 – Eachléim to Belmullet road – and this figure includes a sum of £100,000 for improvement works to the Gaisce road. I understand that as flooding was a problem the level of this road was raised and protective railings placed on both sides. I also understand from Mayo County Council that due to this expenditure the condition of the road has greatly improved. The county council has also informed me that they have provided a separate route that can be used when there is a problem with the road due to high tides.

However, my Department will ask Mayo County Council to provide a report on the works referred to by the Deputy. The case will then be examined, having regard to work already done and the necessity for further improvements.
