Vol. 527 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Strength.

Liam Lawlor

Question:

141 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of gardai attached to Ronanstown Garda Station, Dublin 22; the number of garda vehicles available to members of the force operating out of this station; the average number of vehicles in operation at any given time when other vehicles are out of service; if he has satisfied himself with the level of staffing at Ronanstown Station in view of the fact that the large Liffey Valley shopping centre and attendant new housing estates are within its immediate policing area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28089/00]

I am informed by the Garda authorities who are responsible for the detailed allocation of personnel to individual areas that the current personnel strength, all ranks, of Ronanstown Garda station is 66. This figure includes four probationer gardaí who were allocated to the station on 29 November 2000.

I am also informed that there are seven vehicles currently attached to Ronanstown Garda station – one patrol car, one public order van, two detective branch cars, two drug unit cars and one community policing van. The sub district is also patrolled by the divisional drug, task force and traffic units. The patrol car and public order van are manned on a 24 hour basis. The other vehicles allocated to Ronanstown operate according to the roster of the units to which they are allocated. When a vehicle is out of service for whatever reason, every reasonable effort is made to bring it back into service as soon as possible or alternatively provide a replacement vehicle.
I am further informed that Garda management is satisfied that the personnel resources currently in place at Ronanstown are adequate in meeting the policing needs of the area.
