Vol. 527 No. 2

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 31 from Deputy Joe Higgins. I call on Deputy Joe Higgins to state the matter.

(Dublin West): Under Standing Order 31, I seek leave to move the Adjournment of the Dáil to debate the following matter of urgent public importance: The need to change the crude, inappropriate and counter-productive policy of total deregulation of the taxi service which has resulted in the ongoing absence of taxis; and the need to discuss an immediate and ordered increase in the number of taxis, particularly in Dublin, in a way that provides the necessary improvements in the service while allowing those providing the service to make a reasonable living.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31. Therefore I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
