Vol. 528 No. 2

Written Answers. - Nursing Staff.

Seymour Crawford

Question:

158 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of nurses who were employed in the health service here in 1995; the number who are employed in similar positions at the present time; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30100/00]

The following is the number of nurses, employed in the health service, by category, as recorded in the Health Service Personnel Census, for the years 1995 and 1999, 1999 is the latest year for which data is available. All numbers are expressed in wholetime equivalents, wte. It is important to note that certain grade categories were amalgamated or classified under different headings over the period in question. These factors explain the absence of data for certain categories of nursing staff for individual years. Nursing students participating in the nursing registration-diploma programmes are supernumerary to service requirements and are not part of the rostered workforce. Therefore they have been excluded from the census.
