Vol. 528 No. 2

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Enda Kenny

Question:

220 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Education and Science if a person (details supplied) in County Mayo is entitled to a third level grant; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29837/00]

The student, to whom the Deputy refers, holds a national certificate in humanities – heritage studies from Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology and is currently pursuing a post leaving certificate, PLC, course in print journalism at the Community College, Moneenagieisha, Galway.

Under the terms of the European Social Fund Aided Maintenance Grants Scheme for Post Leaving Certificate Courses 2000, grants are available to eligible candidates who are entering approved PLC courses for the first time in the 2000-01 school year, or who are already in attendance on an approved PLC course. However, candidates are ineligible if they already hold an NCVA level two or level three qualification, or a third level qualification at national certificate, national diploma, degree, post-graduate or equivalent level.

As the candidate in question already holds a third level qualification at national certificate level, he is ineligible for grant assistance in respect of the PLC course.
