Vol. 528 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

250 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of teaching principals in the education system; the number of such teachers in each of the past three years who have taken early retirement; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29983/00]

The information requested by the Deputy is being compiled in my Department and will be forwarded to her.

With effect from 1 September 2000, administrative principals are appointed to all schools with seven or more mainstream class teachers. In addition, schools with a principal plus 11 or more teachers, including ex-quota posts, may appoint an administrative principal.

Teaching principals are now released from teaching duties for a specific number of days per year to enable them undertake administrative leadership and management functions. My Department will pay substitution costs for the days in question. I have recently approved a 100% increase in the number of days for which teaching principals can be released from teaching duties.
