Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Harbours and Piers.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

184 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the proposals he has for phase 2 of the refurbishment and deepening of Rossaveel Harbour, County Galway; when this work will take place; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30504/00]

Last summer I commissioned O'Hare and Associates to undertake a full assessment of the existing infrastructure and onshore facilities at Rossaveel Fishery Harbour Centre in terms of meeting the existing and future requirements of the fishing industry, tourism, commercial traffic and the social and economic fabric of the region. The study is now complete and in line with its recommended options on current and future infrastructural needs at the harbour, I have given the go-ahead to progress the project as quickly as possible.

The report recommends a phased development. Phase 1 provides for the upgrading of existing facilities as well as the provision of a dedicated ferry berth with a 100m wharf and water depth of 3m. Included also in phase 1 is additional dredging in the harbour area and navigation channel. Phase 1 cost is estimated at £4.857 million.

Phase 2 involves the provision of a deepwater berth and breakwater to service the needs of larger fishing vessels and additional traffic. The estimated cost of phase 2 is £9.927 million giving a total cost of some £14.8 million.

The upgrading work and the detailed pre-planning, technical and engineering design for the development phase is getting under way with a view to tangible progress this year.
