Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - United Nations Security Council.

Michael Creed

Question:

255 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the staff complement available to the Irish mission at the United Nations; and the proposals he has to increase this in view of Ireland's membership of the Security Council. [2346/01]

The normal complement of staff at the mission to the United Nations in New York is 16. Following our election to the Security Council a new unit was set up at the Irish mission to service the council. Additional temporary posts were allocated to the mission as follows: one assistant secretary, one counsellor, one military adviser, four first secretaries, two assistant legal advisers, one higher executive officer, one clerical officer, one clerk-secretary.

The following additional staff were also assigned to the political division in Dublin: one counsellor, three first secretaries, three third secretaries and one clerical officer. A first secretary post was also allocated to the Irish mission to the United Nations in Geneva. I am satisfied that this allocation of staff is sufficient to provide an effective service during Ireland's period of membership of the council.
