Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Pension Provisions.

Nora Owen

Question:

298 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the progress that has been made to amend the pensions of former Aer Rianta and Aer Lingus staff following her meeting with a deputation; the discussion she has had with the Department of Finance with regard to this matter; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1651/01]

Michael Noonan

Question:

303 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she is bringing forward any proposals arising from the task force which examined the pension position of retired staff in Aer Lingus and Aer Rianta; if she has decided to put additional moneys into the Aer Lingus/Aer Rianta pension fund; if her attention has been drawn to the widespread concern among existing and retired staff about their pension position; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1697/01]

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

309 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if the issue of the low level of pension for Aer Lingus/Aer Rianta employees has been resolved; if she can clarify the intentions of Aer Lingus/Aer Rianta with regard to the possibility of establishing a separate pension fund; the way in which this would affect current pensioners; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2063/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 298, 303 and 309 together.

My reply to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 315 and 316 dated 3 October 2000, Nos. 8, 40 and 66 of 19 October 2000 and Nos. 169 and 183 of 28 November 2000 deal comprehensively with the background and developments concerning Aer Lingus and Aer Rianta pensions and proposals relating to the establishment of new pension schemes by the companies concerned.

As I have indicated previously, enhancements to the pension entitlements of pensioners must be linked to and in line with any improvements that may emerge from negotiations between staff interests and the companies concerned regarding new pension schemes. The terms of any new schemes are essentially a matter for Aer Lingus and Aer Rianta to negotiate with staff interests within the terms of overall Government policy on public sector pensions. My Department will monitor these negotiations with particular regard to the concerns of retired staff in the context of the new schemes.
