Question:

311 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if there are regulations which preclude any portion of a licensed premises from being used as a sub-post office; and if so, the details of the relevant regulations. [2188/01]

A long standing regulation which forms part of a contract between An Post and a person to be appointed as a sub-postmaster/postmistress specifies that a person connected, directly or indirectly, with the ownership or management of an inn or public house, or any establishment licensed for the sale of drink to be consumed on the premises, may only be appointed as a postmaster/postmistress provided that there is no direct public access between the sub-post office and the licensed portion of the premises; that the post office portion of the premises, if licensed, be delicensed, or, where a licence is being obtained, that it does not cover the post office portion of the premises; and that if, at any time, his/her connection with the licensed trade is found to be detrimental to An Post's interest, a postmaster/postmistress will be required to sever it or to relinquish his/her appointment.
