Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Army Barracks.

Jack Wall

Question:

323 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Defence the plans he has to refurbish facilities for members of the Defence Forces within the barrack structures with regard to washing, cooking and sleeping activities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1338/01]

The position is that upwards of £43 million is being allocated in my Department's Estimates this year for the provision of new buildings and the upgrading of existing facilities. In this connection, the provision of working, cooking and sleeping facilities for the Defence Forces had a high priority. Current projects in this years programme are as follows: new dining complex/NCO's mess Curragh Camp, upgrade of Connolly Officers' mess Curragh Camp for student accommodation, upgrade of blocks at Clarke Barracks Curragh Camp for other ranks' accommodation, upgrade of blocks at Cathal Brugha Barracks for officer accommodation and upgrade of kitchens at St. Bricin's Hospital. Other projects which are now at the planning stage include the upgrade of block at McKee Barracks for other ranks accommodation, upgrade of accommodation at Coolmoney Camp, County Wicklow, and Kilworth Camp, County Cork, upgrade of officers' mess kitchen at Ceannt Barracks, Curragh Camp, and new cookhouses at Renmore Barracks, Galway, and Stephens Barracks, Limerick.
