On the basis of the information provided, I regret to say that a pension is not payable in respect of such service.

Jack Wall

Question:

335 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Defence when his Department will pay the military service allowance to the retired members of the Defence Forces who are not in receipt of the payment; the other criteria that are involved in the payment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2179/01]

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

337 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Defence the reason the military service allowance is being refused prior to 1990; and if he will take action to remedy this. [2407/01]

I propose to take Question Nos. 334, 335 and 337 together.

These questions refer to the issue of having military service allowance included in the calculation of pensions of Defence Forces personnel who retired before 1 August 1990. As I have previously indicated to the House, this issue will be further considered in the light of the final report of the Commission on Public Service Pensions, which was recently submitted to my colleague the Minister for Finance. The Government intends to publish the report and once it has had an opportunity to consider it in detail to make formal decisions on the commission's recommendations, including any related to the pensionability of allowances in so far as it affects public service groups and pensioners.
