Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Grant Payments.

Michael Ring

Question:

394 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development when persons (details supplied) in County Mayo will receive suckler cow premium for 2000. [1554/01]

The persons named submitted an application under the 2000 suckler cow premium scheme for 15 cows on 18 May 2000.

The animal bearing tag number PGA 141364, which had been included on the application, was slaughtered on 2 August 2000 within the six month retention period. The persons named were written to on 23 October 2000 and queried about the slaughter of the animal. They replied that the animal was slaughtered as it had suffered from mastitis. They had replaced the animal with a heifer on 16 October 2000.

Term and condition 22(a) of the terms and conditions of the scheme states that replacement must take place within 20 days of the date of loss/sale and that the district livestock office must be notified of replacement details, in writing, within ten working days of the date of replacement.

As the persons named did not notify the replacement details within the required period they were written to on 3 November 2000 and informed that the animal in question was being deleted from the claim with consequent reduction penalties on payments due on the remaining animals. The persons named have appealed the decision and have supported their appeal with certification from their veterinary surgeon that the animal was slaughtered on his advice. The appeal has been accepted and the animal is being deleted from the claim without any reduction penalties being imposed on the remaining animals in line with the terms and conditions of the scheme.

However, ongoing system checks have revealed that another animal bearing tag number PTA 283374 has been slaughtered within the retention period on 25 October 2000. The persons named were written to on 24 January 2000 and asked to explain the slaughter of the animal. When a reply is received by my Department the claim of the persons named will be processed and any entitlement established will be paid.
